Mike Warren, Chief Executive Officer
Mike Warren is President and Chief Executive Officer of Children's Health System of Alabama and Children's Hospital. Children's is an independent, not-for-profit, free-standing pediatric healthcare center. It is among the 20 largest employers in Alabama with over 3000 employees. Children's is the country's 14th largest children's hospital in terms of number of beds and the 10th busiest. In 2007, there were more than 600,000 patient visits, almost 14,000 inpatient stays and more than 50,000 emergency room visits. Children and their families from every county in the State are served each year.
Prior to joining Children's in January, 2008, Warren was Chairman and CEO of Energen Corporation and its two primary subsidiaries, Alagasco and Energen Resources.
Mike Warren was born in Texas, the oldest of six sons, but his family moved to Alabama when he was in grade school. Mike is a product of the Auburn public schools and graduated with honor from Auburn University with a BA degree. He received his law degree from Duke University.
Warren practiced law with the Birmingham firm of Bradley, Arant, Rose & White for a dozen years before joining Alabama Gas in 1983. He became President of Alagasco in 1984 and has held a number of increasingly important positions with Energen before being named President and CEO in February, 1997 and Chairman in January, 1998. Under Warren's leadership, Alagasco was named one of the one hundred best companies to work for in America in the book by the same name and the Fortune Magazine annual listing for two years. In January, 2001, the Birmingham News named Warren its Alabama CEO of the year.
Warren is past chairman of the Administrative Board of Canterbury United Methodist Church where he and his family have been members for over 30 years.
Mike Warren is concerned about education. He served as one of the eight members of the Alabama Education Study Commission. Later he was chairman of the Alabama Commission on School Performance and Accountability. He served for five years as a member of the Mountain Brook School Board. He also chaired Governor Riley's Commission on Efficiency, Consolidation and Funding. He is a former Trustee of Birmingham-Southern College and is a former chairman of the UAB President's Council.
Mike Warren has served as chairman of the Business Council of Alabama, the United Way, Children's Hospital, Leadership Birmingham and Leadership Alabama. He also has been chairman of the Board of Metropolitan Development Board, the Alabama Symphony and the area American Heart Association. He has chaired the general campaign for the United Way twice and the United Negro College Fund. Warren is a member of the NCCJ Board of Advisors.
Mike Warren married his high school sweetheart. He and Anne have three married children and eight grandchildren.
