ACCESS Center -- Children's South
Access Center employees work at three main areas at Children's South location: One-Day Surgery, Clinic registration, and After Hours. The One Day Surgery center is located on the 2nd floor of Children's South, and operates much like the hospital's surgery center. Patients begin arriving as early as 5:30 a.m. for surgery. The vast majority of these patients are pre-registered, so the Access staff only has to verify information, obtain signatures, copy insurance and identification cards, and affix a patient identification band to the patient's wrist. Downstairs, on the 1st floor of Children's South, is the Access Center area for Clinic registration. Various clinics operate Monday through Friday, generally between the hours of 7:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. Here, the patient is registered, information and insurance is verified, and paperwork is generated to create a patient chart for the physician. Clinics that currently meet at Children's South include ENT, orthopedics, speech and hearing, diabetes, asthma education, dermatology, allergy, pulmonary, and endocrine. Patients are also checked-out by the Access staff, where they take co-payments and make return patient appointments.
After Hours is located in the same area as Clinic registration at Children's South. After Hours is open from 5- 10 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. till 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The clinic sees patients who were either unable to see their regular physician during the day, or had a minor emergency during hours when their physician office is closed. The Children's South After Hours clinic is a referral clinic- parents must contact their child's primary physician for referral to be seen at After Hours. Patients who require more emergent or advanced care, or require admission, are transferred or transported to Children's Hospital downtown.
