INAUGURAL CHILDREN’S CUP REGATTA SCHEDULED FOR AUG. 21 ON MOBILE BAY
06/04/2010

MOBILE (June 3, 2010) - The Children's Hospital of Alabama, in partnership with Fairhope Yacht Club and Katy's Catering, announces the inaugural Children's Cup Regatta, a full day of racing and entertainment scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21 on Mobile Bay.

Boats will sail from the Fairhope Yacht Club (101 Volanta Ave., Fairhope). A skippers' meeting will be held that day at 9:30 a.m. Warning signals will sound at 12:30 p.m.

The event is being held in memory of the late Dr. Jim Dearth, longtime CEO of Children's Hospital and a sailing and racing enthusiast. The event also honors 16-year-old Katie Hamlin of Daphne, who recently spent more than six months in Children's Hospital battling a life-threatening illness.

Adults and children alike will find a variety of races to enter, including PHRF, Portsmouth, Rhodes 19, Catalina 22, Laser Radial, 420, Opti (Advanced), and Opti Green. Youth may also compete in the Raingutter Regatta to see which 6-inch-long sailboat will be the first to reach the bottom of a 10-foot length of rain gutter filled with water.

Entry fees are $15 per person for the adult class races; $5 per person for the Raingutter Regatta. Admission for spectators is free but donations will be accepted and boat sponsorships encouraged. Those interested in racing should preregister by contacting Cathy Cromartie, vice commodore of the Fairhope Yacht Club, at cmcromartie@bellsouth.net or 251-895-0993, or Kerrie Benson of Children's Hospital at 251-610-4969.

In addition to the races, Katy's Catering of Foley will provide barbecue plates for a $5 donation. Jackson Project will provide musical entertainment from 6 until 9 p.m.

The Children's Hospital of Alabama is the 10th busiest pediatric medical center in the United States. Last year Children's treated more than 1,200 children from Mobile and Baldwin counties. Children's is one of only about 45 freestanding acute care hospitals of its kind in the nation and the only hospital in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. Children's is a private, not-for-profit hospital governed by a volunteer board of trustees. For more information, visit www.chsys.org.
