Each year more than 170 children from all over Alabama and bordering communities are admitted to the Burn Center at Children's Hospital. Our Burn Unit is a 6-bed unit supported by a team of professionals that includes surgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, nutritionists, social workers, child life counselors and teachers, and chaplains. Our center is recognized nationally for providing excellent care for traumatically burned children. The average hospital stay of a severely burned child is over 7 days, significantly longer than most other types of pediatric hospital stays. Most children hospitalized because they've been burned also require follow up care on an out-patient basis. In addition to those who have been burned so severely that they must be admitted to our hospital, typically we treat more than 1800 less severely burned children on an out-patient basis each year. Our out-patient support can continue from 2 weeks up to 2 years. Inpatient care- We use an interdisciplinary care model to provide comprehensive care to seriously burned and injured children ages birth to 15 years. Intensive care can include invasive monitoring, 1:1 nursing care and ventilator support. Outpatient care- Ambulatory care is provided to children who have suffered minor burns. They can be seen 24 hours per day, seven days a week. In addition, we have specific clinic appointment times to accommodate patient and family needs.
We work in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Health and Department of Homeland Security to provide data for burn bed availability in the United States. This information is sent from our Burn Center weekly, and is available for disaster preparedness. This was put into place following the disaster of 9/11.
